For our final October hike on October 28th, we’re heading to Goodan Ranch—a place known for its rich history and ghostly encounters! This trail winds through what was once a bustling homestead, now preserved as part of Sycamore Canyon Preserve. 🌿👻 The Story of Goodan Ranch Legend has it that the ranch is haunted by the spirits of former ranch hands. After a fire destroyed much of the property, strange sightings began to occur near the old barn and ruins. Hikers have reported seeing shadowy figures and hearing faint whispers drifting through the trees at dusk. Could these be the voices of the past echoing through time? We’ll dive into the full story on the day of the hike, unraveling the mysterious history that makes Goodan Ranch such a fascinating (and slightly spooky!) place to explore. 🕰️👀 Educational Focus This hike will help kids understand how human activity and land use have shaped the local environment. As we walk through the ruins, we’ll discuss the history of ranching in the area and how settlers altered the landscape over time. We’ll explore the balance between preserving these historical sites and maintaining the natural ecosystem. Along the way, we’ll point out native plants like coastal sage scrub, buckwheat, and black sage, and explain their importance in supporting local wildlife. Kids will learn how these resilient plants survive in dry, rocky conditions and how they play a role in soil stabilization and habitat creation. We’ll also talk about the impact of wildfires on both the landscape and the local community, highlighting the 2003 Cedar Fire that swept through the area and how the land has recovered since.
